Duff, E.G. (1905), p.5

AWDLEY [or SAMPSON] (JOHN), printer in London, was a younger son of Sampson Awdley verger of Westminster Abbey who died in 1559-60. He was admitted a freeman of the Company of Stationers between October 1st and November 26th, 1556, under the name of John Sampson but his name is not found in the charter of 1557. From 1559 onwards he printed a very large" number of books and is entered very frequently in the Stationers' Registers up to the year 1570-71, after which he entered no more copies though he continued to print. He died in 1575 and his will dated June 22nd was proved on September 16th. He left a widow Elizabeth { AWDELY, Elizabeth ‹ LBT 06442 › }, a son Sampson, and five daughters, one married to John Simpson { } a stationer. [Plomer, Wills, p. 23.] His place of business was in Little Britain Street by Great St. Bartholomew's without Aldersgate. [D.N.B.]
