Gertrude van Amersfoordt
Duff, E.G. (1905), p.14
BIRCKMAN (FRANCIS), stationer in London, was a native of Cologne, and one of a large family of booksellers who had shops in many cities. Francis is first mentioned in 1504, when in partnership with Gerard Cluen { CLUEN, Gerard ‹ LBT 28379 › }of Amersfoordt, presumably a relative of his wife, Gertrude van Amersfoordt { BIRCKMAN, Gertrude van Amersfoordt ‹ LBT 05108 › }, he issued a Sarum Missal. For the next few years he d{sappears, but about 1510 commenced a career of great activity, issuing numbers of Sarum service books, remarkable for their fine printing and decoration. His place of business was in St. Paul's Churchyard; no sign is ever mentioned, but it was on the east side somewhere near Colet's school. No book is known printed for him after 1529, and he probably died about that time, as his place was taken in 1530 by his son Francis { BIRCKMAN, Francis ‹ LBT 28356 › }. In 1531 an action was brought against the guardians of his children to recover money for a large consignment of English New Testaments, so that Birckman was mixed up in their dispersal in England. The devices which he used always contained his mark and the arms of Cologne, and these are introduced in many of the ornamental borders which were engraved for the books which he published.
