BOWLES (JOHN), printseller in London, Black Horse, Cornhill; and [in the Strand] over against Devereux Court, without Temple Bar, 1709. Arber states [T.C. III. 701, Index] that John and Thomas Bowles sold G. de l'Ide's map [Theatrum Historicum] ; the announcement referred to [III. 647] mentions neither, but their names appear on the map itself [B.M. maps 100 (3).].

BOWLES (JOHN), book, map, and print-seller in London, (1) Opposite the Stocks Market, 1724-39 (or earlier); (2) Mercer's Hall in Cheapside, 1728; (3) Black Horse in Cornhill I740(?)-I775. 1720-79. Born in 1701. Brother of Thomas Bowles { BOWLES, Thomas (1690 - 1767) ‹ LBT 02667 › }.Is believed to have commenced business about 1720.
In 1724, he was one of the publishers of the fourth edition of Britannia Depicta. In 1728 he issued The New Principles of Gardening from Mercer's Hall. He and his brother Thomas, though they had separate shops, were interested in the same publications. One of the maps in which both their imprints is found is De l'Isle's Theatrum Historicum, which was originally published in 1709, but the copy on which their names are found had evidently been in circulation for some years as there are traces of erasure of earlier names above which the Bowles imprints have been re-engraved [B.M. Maps 1000 (3)].
From 1754 John Bowles' second son Carington { BOWLES, Carington (1724 - 1793) ‹ LBT 02663 › } was in partnership with him and the firm was then known as John Bowles & Son. They issued an elaborate trade card, showing part of a map of England. He died in 1779, and his will was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. [335 Warburton.] In 1780 the business was in the hands of Robert Wilkinson [Sir H. G. Fordham, Hertfordshire Maps 1914, p. 76.]
