BROTHERTON (JAMES), bookseller and publisher in London, (1) Next door to Tom's Coffee-House in Cornhill, (2) Royal Exchange. Probably a relative of John Brotherton { BROTHERTON, John ‹ LBT 28608 › }, whom he appears to have succeeded in the Cornhill business. In 1761 James was advertising quack medicines [Public Advertiser, January 1st], and his name appears in Kent's Directory for 1768.

About the year 1770 he was joined by John Sewell { SEWELL, John ‹ LBT 20164 › – who had been one of his apprentices}, and they became the publishers of several books and pamphlets dealing with the American colonies [J. C. B. L.]. In 1775 they issued, in partnership with Robson and Walter, a History of Jamaica. A work with a similar title had been published by T. Lowndes { LOWNDES, Thomas ( - 1784) ‹ LBT 28331 › } in the preceding year. James Brotherton either died or retired from business in 1775, and Sewell continued to carry it on alone.
