Further Notes

6 May 1834 - C.B. = Letter was read --- Gentlemen With all due respect permit me to submit to your consideration the following statement. I took up my freedom by Patrimony in May 1792, and following Moth my Livery, and in 1800 served the Office of Renter Warden. I was brought up a Printer and carried on that Profession for many years in Fleet Street and Fetter Lane, and trust that during that time with irreproachable conduct till I quitted Business. From these circumstances I entertained the Idea that when the proper time arrived I should enjoy the Honor of a Seat in the Court, and therefore did not take the liberty to intrude on your attention; but was much hurt at finding myself passed in the call of November 1831, and intended to address the Court on the next occasion, but was disappointed by not knowing the time when it was about to take place. I cannot imagine it could proceed from any other cause but not being generally known to the Court, as I entertain hopes I am in every way eligible to the sought for honor. Flattering myself that y wishes may still be realized, permit me to subscribe myself --- Clerk to reply and explain to him that the Election of Assistants is by Ballot --- 3 Jun 1834 = Clerk had written and received another letter -- both entered Fenchurch Buildings 12th May 1834 Sir Your Letter of the 6th instant having been laid before the Master --- I am instructed to state that the recent election of Assistants was by ballot, and that the circumstance of the choice not having fallen on you, cannot be considered and could not be intended to convey any reflection upon your conduct or character, or to impeach your eligibility to fill the Office of an Assistant Charles Rivington, Clerk Gentlemen Having been favored with an answer to my Letter --- gratifying to my wishes, permit me to return my respectful thanks for the Honor conferred on --- --- 6 Oct 1835 - letter Gentleman, Concluding from the recent death of Mr.Bensley and Marriage of Mrs.Pettiward, that an increase of your Court may shortly take place, I trust I shall not be deemed intruding by my soliciting your favourable consideration on my behalf, when such an event shall occur. I will not trouble you Gentlemen with a recapitualationof my Letter of May 6, 1834 to which I most respectfully beg leave to refer you, to which you did me the High Honor of returning and official and gratifying Answer. Should I be the object of your choice I pledge myself, to the utmost of my Abilities, faithfully and conscientiously to promote the best interests of the Company by discharging the duties required --- Cottage Sadlers Wells Oct 6 1835. ---
