CHASTELAIN (GEORGE), stationer in London and Oxford, is first mentioned in the colophon of an edition of the Informatio puerorum, printed at London by Pynson { PYNSON, Richard ( - 1529) ‹ LBT 28537 › }, about 1500, for him and John Bars { BARS, John ‹ LBT 28353 › }. In June, 1502, he was admitted to the liberties of the University as a "servant" of Eliseus Ruthyn. In December of the same year he acted as deputy for Jean Richard in a dispute concerning the debts left by William Lesquier. In 1506 Pynson printed for him an edition of the Principia of Peregrinus de Lugo. He is described on the titlepage as living in Oxford in the street of St. Mary the Virgin, at the sign of St. John the Evangelist. In 1507-10 he bound books for Magdalen College. [Magd. Reg., I, pp. 64-6.] He died in 1513, and on October 3rd his goods were valued by William Howberch and Richard Pate at £24. The administrators of the estate were Richard Wutton, a bedell, and Henry Jacobi { JACOBI, Henry ‹ LBT 28411 › }, a stationer. [Madan, Oxford Press, p. 11. Gibson, Oxford Bindings, p. 46.]
