Further Notes

Hutchins, vol.2, p.384 records a monumental inscription from St.Peter's Church, Dorchester, Dorset - "Inferius in crypta situm est corpus / WILLIELMI CHURCHILL, / Viri probi, & integerrimi,/ Patriae suae amantissimi,/ Qui decessit 17 Julii, A.D.1706,/ Natus Annos 78. / Uxorem duxit ELIZABETHAM, / Filiam Nicholai AWNSHAM de Isleworth, / in comitatu Middlesexiae, / Feminam pietate & virtute insignem. / Quae obiit 20 Junii, 1714, / eAnnos nata 84, & justa jacet. / Liberos decem susceperunt, quorum nomina sunt / Elizabetha, Awnsham de Henbury, Maria, / Willielmus de Dalinhgo, in com. Suffolciae, / Johannes de London, Joshua de Gussage, / Jana, Sarah, Susanna, & Ricahardus / Qui infans decessit." There is a not to say "This monument gone in 1865. --- Hutchins, vol.3, p.491 - [under Gussage All Saints, manor] ""---Colonel Samuel Rolls, sold it to Colonel Joshua Churchill, son of William Churchill of dorchester, esq., who resided here the latter part of his life, and built the house; but dying without issue, 1720, he left it to his nephew Joshua, son of John churchill, of Henbury, esq., whose only daughter Jane, wife of William Churchill, of Colliton, esq., who married her Nov.4, 1773, now pssesses it. In 1742, Joshua churchill was made one of the commissioners of the salt duty, and died 1773". This, however, seems to be incorrect, for the Lanes, Hasting's Roys, and Churchills, were oly lessees of the rectorial glebe ---".
