Wills B:438 - late of Portugal Street, Lincoln's Inn. --- PRO - Bookseller of Lincolns Inn, Middlesex. --- :See also NOTES. "Charities and Benefactions ---", 1868 John Clarke, Esq. Late a member of the Court of Assistants (who died on the 8th May 1838), by a codicil to his will, proved in the Prerogative court of Canterbury on the 25th May,1838, bequeathed as follows - To the Master and Wardens (for the time being) of the Worshipful Company of Stationers I give and bequeath the sum of £100 Three per Cent. Consols, two-thirds of the Interest arising from the Stock to be applied in a yearly pension to the Widow of a Liveryman or Freeman of the age of Sixty years or upwards, of discreet manners, and to be called Clark's Gift. The other one-thir of the Interest of the above Stock to be applied to the general puposed of the Company.* --- * The sum of £90 Consolidated £3 per Cent. Annuities, being the amount of the Legacy, less the duty, was transferred to the Company, who added the sum of £10 Stock thereto. The sum of £3 per Annum is paid in quarterly payments athe the Pension Courts to a poor Widow, the difference being paid by the Company. ---

C.B. - 1 Jul 1837 - Mr.Walter Thomas Clarke requested on behalf of his brother Mr.John Clarke who was not present and was in such an ill state of health as to render him unable to serve the Offices of Master and Warden without great inconvenience that he might be excused serving those Offices upon payment of the usual fine Which upon the question being put was carried in the affirmative - It was then moved and seconded, that in consideration of Mr.John Clarke being rendered unable to serve the Offices by indisposition the fine of £200 to be paid by him be reduced to the sum of £100 - which was ordered accordingly. --- C.B. - 12 Jun 1838 - The Clerk presented the following Letter which he had received from the Executors of Mr.John Clarke deceased late a Member of this Court and also an extract from a Codicil to his Will as follows: 8 Serle Street, Lincolns Inn, May 28 1838 Sir, As executors to the late Mr.John Clarke, we beg to acquaint you that 100 Stock 3 pr.Ct.Consols has been bequeathed to the Master & Wardens of the Stationers Company in trust - an extract of that part of the Will relating thereto shall be forwarded to you. The information we at present require is if in any way the Company are exempted for Legacy Duty, if not we must transfer the 100 Stock less the duty. The Widow we believe is allowed to receive the interest on the £400 invested by the deceased in the Stock of the Stationers Company. Your early answer will oblige Your Obedt.Servts. Young } Executors Extract from the first Codicil to the Will of John Clarke late of Portugal St., Lincolns Inn in the County of Middx Bookseller deceased who died on the 8th day of May 1838 and whose Will and Codicils were proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on the 25th day of May 1838. To the Master and Wardens (for the time being) of the Worshipful Company of Stationers I give and bequeath the sum of One Hundred pounds three per Cent Consols two thirds of the interest arising from the Stock to be applied in a yearly pension to the Widow of a Liveryman or Freeman of the age of Sixty years or upwards of discreet manners and to be called Clarke's Gift. The other one third of the interest of the above Stock to be applied to the general purposes of the Company. The Executors are Sarah Clarke Widow of the Deceased Walter Thomas Clarke brother of the deceased and Charles Cunningham Young the Son in Law of the deceased. --- £90 after deducting the duty. -----
