COTTON (WILLIAM), bookseller in London, 1602-9; The Long Shop adjoining Ludgate. Son of William Cotton of Burnison, co. Derby, husbandman. Apprentice to William Leake { LEAKE, William ( - 1633) ‹ LBT 07160 › }, stationer, for eight years from March 26th, 1594: took up his freedom on April 19th, 1602 [Arber, ii. 191, 731].
On September 3rd, 1604, he was fined 10s. for arresting a freeman contrary to the custom of the Company [Arber, ii. 839, 840]. On August 11th, 1602, he entered the life and deathe of the Lord Cromwell, as yt was lately acted by the Lord Chamberleyn his servantes, of which the only copy now known is in the Bodleian. On May 21st, 1604, he secured from the widow { HAYES, (Unknown) ‹ LBT 03246 › } of Thomas Hayes { HAYES, Thomas ( - 1604) ‹ LBT 08430 › }, Heliodorus' Ethiopian History, originally the copyright of Francis Coldocke { COLDOCK, Francis ( - 1603) ‹ LBT 08163 › }, and the first part of the Flowers of Luis de Granada [Arber, iii. 262]. The Heliodorus was in 1619 wrongfully claimed by Lawrence Hayes { HAYES, Lawrence ‹ LBT 10142 › } as having been his father's copyright [Arber, iii. 651].
The last book entry under Cotton's name occurs on June 2nd, 1609, and he was dead before the 27th of the following November, when his widow transferred one of his copyrights to Clement Knight { KNIGHT, Clement ( - 1630) ‹ LBT 07956 › } [Arber, iii, 411, 424], but the bulk of his copies appear to have been in the hands of the Company and were by them assigned to William Barret { BARRETT, William ( - 1624) ‹ LBT 08145 › } on February 16th, 1616/7.
