Further Notes

Renter Warden - Davies having been chosen Alderman (19 Sep 1667) and nighted (23 Oct 1667), he was immediately elected to the Court and, at the earliest occasion, to the Mastership. On 30 Jun 1668, just prior to that election a delegation of Assistants was sent to wait on him "to acquaint him with severall Fines due -- uppon his admittance to this Table", presumably his Renter Warden fine and, if he was to be Master, his fines for Under and Upper Warden. Davies must have agreed to the fines for he was duly elected Master, but as late as Jun 1672 the Company was still trying to collect the money due." --- Translation - According to the tradition by which a Lord Mayor had to belong to one of the twelve major companies Davies was translated to the Drapers' Company just prior to being elected to the Mayoralty. --- Educated at St.Paul's School. --- Woodhead, J.R. (1965) - identifies him with the wrong apprentice - Ald Farringdon Without, 19 Sep 1667-Mar 1680(d). He inherited through his m a part of Hugh Audley's fortune. Lands Yorks, Essex. Col Orange Regt, 1677-80. Commsr for Lieut, 1677. "A mean spirited person" - Account of the Aldermen, 1672 [BL, Stow MS 186]. ---
