DOWNES (BARTHOLOMEW), stationer of London, 1618-36. The career of this stationer is somewhat puzzling. On March 23rd, 1617/8, under a Privy Seal, Bartholomew Downes in company with two other London printers, Felix Kingston { KINGSTON, Felix ( - 1653) ‹ LBT 07948 › } and Matthew Lownes { LOWNES, Matthew ( - 1625) ‹ LBT 07992 › }, was appointed King's Printer in Ireland. About the same time he also took a share in what was known as the Latin Stock, for which he paid £25, but in the proceedings that followed upon the winding up of that venture, his brother Thomas Downes { DOWNES, Thomas ( - 1658) ‹ LBT 11199 › } declared that Bartholomew was "only a workeman employed in binding of bookes and not using any other trade." He appears however to have had a share in the publication of several news-sheets between 1621 and 1623, being associated with Wm. Ley { SHEFFORD, William ( - 1628) ‹ LBT 10515 › } and Nath. Butter { BUTTER, Nathaniel (bap. 1583 - 1664) ‹ LBT 08120 › }. [Arber, iv. 61, 78-80, 89; Library, July, 1 907.]
