GAVER (JAMES), stationer in London, was a member of the large family of Van Gavere, binders in the Low Countries. He was employed as an assistant by Wynkyn de Worde { WORDE, Wynkyn de ( - 1534) ‹ LBT 02699 › } who on his death bequeathed him books to the value of twenty marks and appointed him one of the executors of his will, the other being John Byddell { BYDDELL, John ‹ LBT 28368 › }. On March 2nd, 1535, Gaver took out letters of denization in which he is described as "stationer from the dominion of the Emperor." [Pat. 26 Hen. VIII, p. 2, m. 42.] He appears to have continued to live with Byddell in De Worde's house, the Sun in Fleet Street and in 1539 issued from that address an edition of Stanbridge's Accidence apparently identical with the edition issued by N. Bourman { BOURMAN, Nicholas ‹ LBT 06975 › }. In 1541 Gaver's goods were valued at five pounds and in 1544 at thirty. [R. of A., I, 94.] He died in 1545 and his will was proved on June 15th of that year. He requested to be buried in St. Bride's Church near Wynkyn de Worde and appointed as overseer to his will his son-in-law William Stewarde { STEWARD, William ‹ LBT 08500 › }, a stationer. Bequests are left to his wife Joan { GAVER, Joan ‹ LBT 05113 › }, his daughter Mary Stewarde { GAVER, Mary (mar. STEWARD) ‹ LBT 03251 › } and his grandchildren Barbara, John and Catheryn.
