HAUKYNS (JOHN), printer in London, appears to have been an assistant to Richard Pynson { PYNSON, Richard ( - 1529) ‹ LBT 28537 › } for he finished the printing of Palsgrave's L'Esclarcissement de la langue Francaise which was in the press at the time of Pynson's death. One part of the book was finished in July, 1530, and it was issued some time after September 2nd, the date of the privilege. Beyond the printing of this book nothing is known of him, nor is he mentioned in Pynson's will. Herbert suggests that he was the John Haukin or Hankyn mentioned in the Twelve merry gestys of one called Edyth, printed in 1525, and was the father of that "lyeng wydow" but there is no foundation for this conjecture.
