ISLIP (ADAM) printer in London, 1591-1640. On October 7th, 1578, Adam Islip who was originally bound to Hugh Jackson { JACSON, Heugh ( - 1616) ‹ LBT 08274 › }, stationer of London, was set over to Thomas Purfoote { PURFOOT, Thomas (1518 - ) ‹ LBT 08282 › } for the remainder of his term of apprenticeship [Arber, ii. 87]. During this time he was concerned with Roger Ward { WARDE, Roger ( - 1598) ‹ LBT 08076 › } and others in printing John Day's A B C, etc., without license. Ward admitted that Adam Islip had furnished him with some of the type from Thomas Purfoote's printing house, without his master's knowledge [Arber, ii. 765, 769]. There is no record of any punishment having followed this offence, and Islip was admitted a freeman of the Company on June 8th, 1585 [Arber, ii. 694]. His first book entry occurs on September 16th, 1591 [Arber, ii. 595]. In 1595 Islip took into partnership for a while William Moring { MORINGE, William ‹ LBT 08458 › }, and about 1606 he sold his printing house for £140 to Robert Raworth { RAWORTH, Robert ‹ LBT 08564 › } and John Monger { MONGER, John ‹ LBT 09040 › }, but they were deprived for printing Venus and Adonis without license, and John Haviland { HAVILAND, John ‹ LBT 09027 › } was upon petition admitted in Raworth's room. Adam Islip, however, immediately set up another printing house, and in 1615 was returned as having two presses [Arber, iii. 699, 700-4]. He died between September 4th and 25th, 1639, his will being proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on the latter date. By it he bequeathed to his kinsman Kenelm Islip { ISLIP, Kenelme ‹ LBT 09039 › }all his copies after his wife's {Susan ISLIP, Susan ‹ LBT 03165 › } death, and to Richard Hearne { HEARNE, Richard ‹ LBT 09035 › } all his printing presses, letters and implements used for printing, as well as a sum of one hundred pounds [P.C.C., 151, Harvey].
