MILLER (GEORGE), printer in London; Blackfriars, 1601-46. Son of George Miller, of Kettering, co. Northampton, schoolmaster. Apprentice to Richard Field { FIELD, Richard (bap. 1561 - 1624) ‹ LBT 06931 › }, successor to Thomas Vautrollier { VAUTROLLIER, Thomas ( - 1587) ‹ LBT 08628 › }, for seven years from Michaelmas, 1604. [Arber, ii. 281.] Field at his death left him a bequest of twenty shillings to purchase a ring. [Plomer, Wills, p. 51.] George Miller and Richard Badger { BADGER, Richard ( - 1641) ‹ LBT 08437 › } afterwards purchased the business. [Arber, iii.703.] George Miller died before October 8th, 1646, on which day his will, dated July 20th preceding, was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. [P.C.C. 147. Twisse.] In it occurs this passage: "Item I give to my sonne Abraham { MILLER, Abraham ( - 1665) ‹ LBT 13889 › } the lease of my house in the Blackfriars with the letter and presses copies and all other utensils belonginge to the printinge house to enter all these immediately after my decease." Miller had four other sons, William { MILLER, William ( - 1693) ‹ LBT 12659 › }, John, Symon { MILLER, Simon ( - 1688) ‹ LBT 12132 › }, and George { }, all of whom except John are found as booksellers. The will also mentions a daughter Martha, a brother William, and sisters Elizabeth Coe, Ellen Brewster, Elizabeth Archer, and Sarah Foster, the residue being left to his wife Anne { MILLER, Anne ‹ LBT 03128 › }. Amongst the witnesses was John Clarke, probably the bookseller of that name.
