NORTON (WILLIAM), stationer in London, was born in 1527. He was an original member of the Stationers' Company on its incorporation in 1557 and rapidly rose to a high position. He was Collector in 1563 and 1564, Under-Warden in 1569-70, Upper-Warden in 1573 and 1577 and Master in 1580, 1586 and 1593. He did not print himself but had a very large number of books printed for him by others. His address was the King's, afterwards Queen's, Arms in St. Paul's Churchyard and he used as a device a tun having the letters Nor upon it and a sprig of "Sweet William." He married Joan { BONHAM, Joan (mar. NORTON) ‹ LBT 03213 › } daughter of William Bonham { BONHAM, William (1497 - 1557) ‹ LBT 06973 › } the stationer and had one son Bonham Norton { NORTON, Bonham ( - 1635) ‹ LBT 08173 › }. He died in 1593 aged 66 and his will was proved January 1st, 1594. He left a large fortune in real and personal estate and made considerable bequests to charity. He was buried in the church of St. Faith and his epitaph has been preserved by Dugdale. (Plomer, Wills, pp. 30-33. D.N.B.]
