Further Notes
Renter Wardenship - Although there is no record of it in the Court Book the Wardens Account ---1663---1727 notes the receipt on this date of £24 from Osborne for his Renter Warden fine. --- Cameron, H.C. (1954), p.15n - "Varnum had been apprenticed to Guy, From about the year 1710 on wards Guy, although continuing his work as a publisher, seems to have withdrawn from the retail bookselling side of the business and to have left its management to Varnum and Osborn, his partners and former apprentices. 1- p.21 [Oxford Arms] The sign , however, was not fated to last long. When Guy died his business passed into the hands of his partner John Osborn, who had been apprenticed to him in 1703. In 1726 Osborn amalgamated his business with that of Thomas Longman, the first of many Longmans, and it was the sign of The Ship, which Longman had bought the year before, and not the sign of the Oxford Arms which was perpetuated after the amalgamation. Longman married Mary Osborn, related to, but not the daughter of his partner, as has ofteen been stated. Earlier he had been Osborn's apprentice. Osborn was a relative of Guy. In the will of John Guy, who died in 1699, £50 is bequeathed 'to Joseph Osborn, my cozen, of Cotton Lesall, Yoeman'. John Osborn had cared for Guy in his old age like a son and it was in his house that he died. Unhappily, after Guy's death, he became involved in a dispute with his hospital. On 3 November 1725 Osb orn presented an account 'for business done for Mr.Guy'. The court, after taking Counsel's opinion, resisted the claim. But on 24 December 1726 the Clerk had to tell the Court that Mr.Osborn had won his case. ---
