POTTER (GEORGE), bookseller in London, 1599-1627; The Bible in St. Paul's Churchyard. Son of Edward Potter of Nyensavage, Salop, weaver. Apprentice to William Browne {Lavin believed this to be a mistake for William Broome BROOME, William ( - 1591) ‹ LBT 08226 › } for eight years from Christmas, 1589 [Arber, ii. 168]. George Potter made his first book entry on April 11th, 1599 [Arber, iii. 142]. In 1601 he succeeded Widow Broome {Joan BROOME, Joan ( - 1601) ‹ LBT 03228 › } at the above address, and secured all her copyrights, which included several of the works of John Lyly, Robert Greene's Pandosto and Warner's Albion's England. The last entry in which his name occurs was an assignment, on April 8th, 1616, of one of his copies to F. Archer { ARCHER, Francis ( - 1638) ‹ LBT 06826 › }; but he appears to have been in business at the time of his death in 1627. His will was proved on April 17th in that year. He left no children, and appointed Edward 'Weaver and Thomas Archer, stationers, his executors [P.C.C., 32, Skynner].
MLT Note: Probably the apprentice of William Broome (LBT/08226) not William Brown as stated in McKerrow, R.B. (1910). Note that that source tells us that he succeeded Widow Broome at her address and secured her copyrights.
