SERES (WILLIAM), printer in London, commenced work about the year 1546. At first he appears to have joined with other printers, Anthony Scoloker { SCOLOKER, Anthony ‹ LBT 30088 › }, William Hill { HILL, William ‹ LBT 07740 › } and especially John Day { DAY, John (1522 - 1584) ‹ LBT 07316 › }. His addresses at first also varied but he seems to have lived first in Ely Rents, Holborn, then at Peter College, finally settling before 1553 at the Hedgehog in St. Paul's Churchyard. In 1553 Seres obtained a privilege for printing service books but on the accession of Mary this privilege was withdrawn, the printer imprisoned and many of his books confiscated. [Egerton Papers, p. 140.] In the charter granted to the Stationers' Company in 1557 Seres' name occurs twenty first in the list and he was evidently a man of much importance, having been elected Master no less than five times. The privilege of printing service books which Seres had lost was re-granted to him and his son by Queen Elizabeth, a valuable concession which gave rise to much contention amongst the stationers. Seres seems to have printed steadily during Elizabeth's reign up to about 1577, after which time his name is not found. [D.N.B.]
