WHITE (WILLIAM), printer in London, 1597-1615; (1) The White Horse in Fleet Lane, over against Sea Coal Lane, 1588-96; (2) Cow Lane, near Holborn Conduit, over against the White Lion. William White was apparently one of Richard Jugge's { JUGGE, Richard ( - 1577) ‹ LBT 07912 › } apprentices, as he was presented for his freedom by Mistress Jugge { JUGGE, Joan ( - 1588) ‹ LBT 03176 › } on April l0th, 1583 [Arber, ii. 688]. He entered into partnership with Gabriel Simpson { SIMPSON, Gabriel ( - 1600) ‹ LBT 07908 › } and their first book entry is recorded on December 13th, 1588 [Arber, ii. 511]. The partnership was dissolved in 1597, when William White having purchased the business of Richard Jones { JONES, Richard ‹ LBT 07865 › } and William Hill { }, moved to Cow Lane [Arber, iii. 702]. In 1598 White printed for Cuthbert Burby { BURBY, Cuthbert ( - 1607) ‹ LBT 08823 › } the first quarto of Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost, and in 1600 for Thomas Millington { MILLINGTON, Thomas ‹ LBT 07079 › } the second quarto of the Third part of King Henry vj. He also entered a large number of ballads and other ephemeral literature. The last entry under his name was made on September 5th, 1615 [Arber, iii. 572]. The date of his death is unknown, but he was succeeded by his son John White { WHITE, John ‹ LBT 09221 › }.
