WOLFE (REYNER), printer in London, was in business as a bookseller as early as 1530 and in 1533 took out letters of denization in which he is described as a native of Gelderland. [Pat. 24 Henry VIII, p. 1, m. 31.] Another Reginald Wolff from the dominion of the Emperor was denizened 8th February, 1542. [Pat. 33 Henry VIII, p. 5, m. 26.] Early in 1536 he was specially admitted a freeman of the Company of Stationers. He apparently went backwards and forwards to the Frankfurt fairs and served as a messenger. Partridge writing to Bullinger in 1538 says "Our friend Rayner did not come to this fair by reason as I understand of the recent death of his wife." [Original Letters relating to the Reformation.] In 1539 we find a payment of a hundred shillings to Rayner Wolf for conveying the King's letters to Christopher Mounte. [Letters and Papers of Henry VIII, xiv, II, 781.] In 1542 Wolfe commenced to print, issuing some works of Leland printed in Roman and Italic type probably obtained abroad and identical with some used by John Wolf at Frankfurt. In these he used a device of children throwing sticks at an apple tree, with the motto "Charitas." In 1547 he was appointed King's printer in Latin Greek and Hebrew, with an annuity of twenty-six shillings and eightpence. From Henry VIII he purchased the chapel or charnel house in St. Paul's Churchyard, which he cleared away and replaced by shops. His own shop in the Churchyard had the sign of the Brazen Serpent and one of his devices had a serpent on a rod as its subject. On the incorporation of the Stationers' Company Wolfe's name occurs seventh on the list and he was elected Master on four occasions in 1560, 1564, 1567 and 1572. During the reign of Mary he produced little, but after Elizabeth succeeded his patents were renewed and his business became more active. During the later years of his life he appears to have collected materials for a chronicle which he intended to have published and which was afterwards prepared by Holinshed. In 1571 he is entered in the Returns of Aliens as "denizen, Douchman, came into this realme about xxv yeares past fre of the companye of Stacioners" [R. of A., II, 12] though this might refer to Reginolde Wolfe the younger { WOLFE, Reginolde ‹ LBT 08812 › }, who was made free of the Company May 17th, 1565. Wolfe died at the end of 1573 and his will was proved January 9th, 1574. It was a very short document leaving some property to his wife Joan { WOLF, Joan ( - 1574) ‹ LBT 03304 › } and everything else to his children. His widow died in 1574 and her will, an elaborate and lengthy document, contains much information both about the family and about other London stationers of the period. [Plomer, Wills, pp. 19-23.] She made arrangements for the publication of Holinshed's Chronicle, which was printed by John Harrison { HARRISON, John ( - 1616) ‹ LBT 07614 › } her son-in-law and published in 1577. [Plomer, English Printing, pp. 103-108. Timperley, 353. D.N.B.]
